Description:
Like all the records Superchunk has produced over the past 30-plus years, Wild Loneliness is outstanding and infectious. After the angst of What a Time to Be Alive, the new record says more about what we have to be thankful for, not about what we have lost in this miserable time. With this album, the band seems to be focusing once again on the potential for development. That potential is built into the songs themselves, in their hidden surprises. For example, when Andy Stack of Wye Oak's saxophone comes in on the title track, it adds a whole new texture to the song. It is the same when Owen Pallett's strings come in on "This Night". And my favorite surprise was the harmonies of Teenage Fanclub's Norman Blake and Raymond McGinley in "Endless Summer". For Corona, Mac, Laura, Jim, and Jon recorded separately. However, this method made it possible for Mike Mills (R.E.M.), Sharon Van Etten, Franklin Bruno, Tracyanne Campbell (Camera Obscura), and others to participate from afar. Some of the songs in the collection were written before the pandemic, but others, like "Wild Loneliness," were written under isolated circumstances. I consider songs to be memory devices. Music crystallizes memory well. Detroit Has a Skyline" reminds me of myself singing along at a Detroit concert 20 years ago. Listening to "Overflows" takes me back to the days when my young son would whisper a slow version of it to me as the lullaby he needed most. Wild Loneliness" is about to become a part of my life and my memory. It will be part of your life, too. And I can also see people 20, 50, 100 years from now listening to this record and marveling at what these artists have created. I can picture them marveling at the beauty, the possibilities, and the wonder of what these artists have created together in this alarming (and alarmingly isolated) time. But we don't have to wait that long. Marvel now. (Maggie Smith)Superchunk is an indie rock band formed in 1989 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
